Remembering my mom’s creativity as we journey into 2021

By Jan Gutowski, Creativity Coach

So many of us are still reeling from the craziness of 2020; so as we reflect on the things we have lost (or gained) over the course of the past year, it is important to remember the power of gratitude for even the smallest accomplishments, joys or learnings.

This year gave us so much to process; and I felt that it became increasingly difficult to really dive into my creativity as I had intended. Being on furlough for nearly four months gave me a lot of free time, but my headspace just wasn’t having it.

The biggest challenge this year, by far, was losing my mom on June 15. She had been experiencing health challenges off & on since October 2019; and toward the end, it just became too much for her normal resiliency to get past. I am so thankful that I had so many great years, and I know she is still nearby. She was always crafty and creative, and I sometimes feel that she is watching me when I paint, or work on my polymer clay and mixed media projects. I also feel that she is kicking my butt and encouraging me put my art out there more than I have. So there it is! My resolution for 2021!

The first project for 2021 has been creating polymer clay jewelry, using found objects & weathered painting style. I have also started on some additional pieces which will be among my usual whimsical gothic art. More to come!

Happy New Year! Let’s get creative!
